Frequently Asked Questions
At The Afterglow Spray Tans we believe a flawless tan starts well before you step into the booth and continues long after you leave.
Q: What should I do before my appointment?
A:
-
Waxing or hair removal should be completed at least 48 hours before your tan to ensure skin has settled.
-
Shaving is best done 12–24 hours prior so your pores aren’t open and absorbing extra colour.
-
Exfoliate the night before using a gentle mitt or scrub, especially on dry areas like knees, ankles and elbows.
-
Arrive with clean skin — free of moisturiser, deodorant, perfume or makeup. Switch to a gentle or fragrance-free deodorant 24 hours prior.
-
Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your tan — hydrated skin = smoother, longer-lasting glow.
-
Avoid using strong active skincare (retinols, strong acids, exfoliant masks) in the 24 hours before your tan.
Q: What should I wear right after my tan?
A:
Loose, dark cotton or jersey fabrics are best. Avoid satins, silks or synthetic textures that can rub the tan off. If the weather’s wet, bring a hoodie, long pants and a towel to protect your glow on the way home.
Q: What happens at the appointment?
A:
Every appointment begins with a pre-tan hydration primer to ensure your skin is even, nourished and ready to take colour beautifully. From there, your shade is custom blended to suit your natural undertones and the look you’re wanting to achieve, so the result feels like your skin, just more radiant. An optional hydrating finishing mist is available for anyone who prefers a dewy, long-wear, camera-ready glow, though the tan develops flawlessly with or without it. The focus is on comfort, ease and results that feel effortless and confident on you.
Q: What about after my tan — how do I look after it?
A:
-
For your first rinse: wait the recommended time (according to your formula) before using soap or body wash.
-
After your second shower, apply a lightweight, hydrating moisturiser to keep the tan looking fresh and even.
-
Drink plenty of water — hydrated skin supports a longer, smoother fade.
-
Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools/spas, saunas or sweating heavily for the first few hours if you chose a rapid-dry formula.
-
Don’t exfoliate or use strong body treatments while your tan is still developing/fading.
Q: Is spray tanning safe during pregnancy / post-partum / for sensitive skin?
A:
Yes. I use gentle, premium formulas that are designed to be safe for many clients, including those with sensitive skin. Please advise me at consultation of any skin condition, triggered pigment (melasma), medication changes or pregnancy considerations — we’ll tailor your tan accordingly.
